Q: What is Leadership Spokane?

A: Leadership Spokane is a ten month long community leadership training program.

 


Q: What are the benefits?

A: Program participants become knowledgeable about crucial community issues.  They gain access to Spokane’s leadership network.  They hone their leadership and problem solving skills and graduate ready to engage in leading the community into the future.

 


Q: How do I apply for Leadership Spokane?

A: Applications are available on the website after the first of the year. Applications are due in April.

A: No, you do not have to be referred to join Leadership Spokane.

Q: How many people are accepted each year?

A: 45 to 50 individuals from a wide variety of industries, organizations, and diverse backgrounds are chosen through a competitive selection process to the Adult program. The YLS program accepts 30 students annually.

 


Q: What is the commitment?

A: The adult program requires 11 full days, beginning with a two-day overnight retreat in September, followed by the first Friday of the month, October through June. Plan on 3-5 hour prep time for each session.

The Youth program requires a full day team-building retreat in August, followed by one evening meeting per month from September through May. There will be some prep time for each session (about an hour) and participants will have opportunities to tour sites.

 


Q: How are classes chosen?

A: Applications and references are reviewed by a committee. Adult candidates are interviewed. Final selection is based upon scores and what each student can gain from the experience as well as contribute to the cohort. The program's goal is to put together together a class with variety of backgrounds and schools. This contributes to a rich and challenging experience.


Q: What is the cost?

A: Tuition is $3,000 for adult Leadership Program, and $125 for YLS. Tuition cost includes all expenses for the retreats, materials and meals/refreshment for class sessions and graduation.

Q: How will my employer benefit?

A: Employers enhance their leadership stature in the region through employee participation in Leadership Spokane’s premiere leadership, education and networking program. Employers gain valued community exposure.  Business and non profit leaders, public officials, and policy makers must know one other and have a keen appreciation for how each contributes to a healthy and economically thriving community in order to successfully navigate these challenging times. Employees gain valuable new skills that they bring back to the work environment.

 


Q: When was Leadership Spokane founded?

A: Leadership Spokane was founded in 1982 as an outgrowth of Expo 74 by a group of business and civic leaders. Leadership Spokane is affiliated with the Community Leadership Association, which has over 600 national and international members, and with Greater Spokane Incorporated. Q: How does YLS communicate with me?

A: Information about the program, schedules and announcements will be posted on the YLS page of the website at www.LeadershipSpokane.org and on the YLS MySpace and Facebook pages.  We will also send you a text message and e-mail a couple days prior to the class sessions with  reminders and updates.  Parents are welcome to join the YLS distribution e-mail list as well.  Note:  the Leadership Spokane office is closed after 5 PM, so it is not useful to call after that time with messages or questions. We also encourage you to make use of the MyLeadership online platform.

Q: What is Youth Leadership Spokane?

A: YLS is a 10-month civic leadership training program, based on the principles of servant leadership and cultural competence. Youth have the desire to serve their community and get to know teens from other schools.  YLS gives them the skills and connections with area leaders so that they can be successful as young servant leaders. Q: Can I get service learning credit for YLS?

A: Leadership Spokane staff will work with your high school to assist you in getting credit for required service learning or for other school projects

 


Q: Are scholarships available?

A: Yes, a limited number of scholarships is available.  We welcome applications from those with financial need and are honored to assist in this way.

 


Q: What does YLS expect of me?

A: Students must demonstrate a commitment to personal growth and to getting involved in their community. Students must have high standards of personal integrity and be able to dedicate the required time to the program.

A: Definitely. With your permission, we will retain your application for preferred consideration for the next selection period.

 


Q: Who should apply for Leadership Spokane?

A: Whether you’re 25 or 65, new in town, just getting established in your career, or have lived in the region for some time, Leadership Spokane is an ideal vehicle to expand your knowledge of the region’s infrastructure. You recieve cross training on how the system works and what impact your industry has on the system as a whole. You will form lasting and very useful networks with current and upcoming leaders.
